Cycle the newest section of the Hauraki Rail Trail, from Te Aroha to Matamata on your choice of bike. Arrange a shuttle to pick you up at the other end of the 37km ride so you can take your time and enjoy the café stops along the way. Perhaps take a short detour off the trail to discover the stunning Wairere Falls - the highest waterfall in the North Island.
Take to the water for a kayak or SUP tour along the Waihou River, and then escape into one of the enchanting bush trails around the base of Mount Te Aroha. If you’re feeling adventurous, head to the summit and be rewarded with stunning 360° views on a fine day.
Arts & culture
Be amazed at the sculptures made from scrap metal while touring the Adrian Worsley Gallery, and marvel at more of this talented artist’s work as you wander along Te Aroha’s main street.
Prepare to enter a magical world at the Hobbiton™ Movie Set in Matamata. Choose between the Hobbiton™ Movie Set tour or the Evening Banquet tour and explore the lush pastures of the Shire™ as featured in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.
Then it’s onto the Herd of Cows in Morrinsville where a trail map will guide you to each of the 60 quirky, colourful members. You’ll never be far from fantastic independent shops and cafés to keep you fueled as you explore the town. While you’re here, visit Morrinsville Gallery where New Zealand art is showcased from The Arts House Trust collection alongside local, national and international pieces across three exhibition spaces.

Walk one of the enchanting bush trails around the base of Mount Te Aroha and if you decide to walk to the summit you’ll be rewarded with stunning 360° views on a fine day.
Discover what remains of the town’s Edwardian heritage and admire the most intact Edwardian spa in New Zealand while enjoying a relaxed picnic lunch in the Te Aroha Domain. Wander the friendly independent retail shops in Te Aroha, Matamata or Morrinsville and take pleasure stopping at the great cafés to admire the treasures you’ve found along the way.
End the day with a soak in the luxurious mineral water and soothe tired muscles in the Te Aroha Mineral Spas which will leave you relaxed and your skin feeling silky smooth.
The next morning, take in the beauty of the North Island’s highest waterfall - Wairere Falls. Be sure to take your camera to capture the view from the top, and togs and a towel in case you feel like a dip in the majestic waterholes along the way. To ensure you end the two-day stay in a state of bliss, visit the Te Aroha Mineral Spas again - this time for a massage, or to indulge in a beauty treatment.
Terms & Conditions
- Information on how to enter the competition forms part of the conditions of entry. Entry into the promotion is deemed as acceptance of its terms and conditions.
- Entry is only open to New Zealand residents aged 18 years or over. The Promoter is Matamata-Piako District Council. Employees of the Promoter and their immediate families, participating agents and their associated agencies are ineligible to enter. The Promoter reserves the right to verify the validity of entries.
- To enter, an eligible participant must complete the website entry form and this will give the eligible participant one entry into the draw. Participation in the Promotion is limited to one entry per person per day.
- Promotion commences 12:01am 24 December 2020 and closes 11:59pm 7 February 2021. Entries received after this closing time will be ineligible for entry.
- The winner of the Promotion will be randomly drawn from one prize pool on 10 February 2021. Attempts will be made to notify the winner by email at the address provided at the time of the promotion entry. If the Promoter, having used reasonable efforts, is unable to contact the winner prior within 5 days, then the prize is forfeited, and an alternative winner will be selected at random. The Promoter’s decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered in to.
- The prize includes the following for two people (winner & guest):
